How the look is made

A 2000s digicam photo looks the way it does for a handful of reasons. Small CCD sensors left shadows a little cyan and highlights warm; 3 to 7 megapixels and a tiny lens made everything soft, and the camera then sharpened hard, leaving a bright halo around edges. Memory was precious, so JPEGs were compressed hard enough to show blocks. At night the built-in flash blew out the middle of the frame and let the corners fall into the dark.

This tool rebuilds each of those in code. It first crops your photo to 4:3 and scales it to the body's resolution (long edge 1,280 px for the 2002 webcam, 2,048 px for the 2004 silver compact, 2,592 px for the 2007 pink slim, 3,072 px for the 2009 point-and-shoot), never upscaling. Then it adds slight barrel distortion, softness, an oversharpening halo, the body's colour (cyan shadows, warm highlights) and colour noise in the darks. With flash on, the light falls from +0.55 EV in the centre to −1.2 EV in the corners, with a cooler colour.

Last, the orange 7-segment date stamp is burnt into the picture and the JPEG is encoded at the body's quality (0.45 to 0.78): the blocks come from real JPEG compression, not a fake effect. Noise comes from a random generator seeded by the shot number, so the same photo always gives the same result. This is a design, not an emulator: it does not claim to reproduce any camera model.

Sample photo: an AI-generated scene (Gemini) run through this filter. An empty street: no people, no text, no logos.

Reading the stamp

On the English page the stamp reads month, day, year (10 30 '26); on the Korean page year first ('26 10 30). Single-digit months and days are padded with a blank digit, like the old cameras. The date is this phone's date at the moment you shoot.

With the weather stamp on, the temperature (a whole number, °F here) and a sky glyph follow: clear (ring), some cloud (cloud outline), cloudy (filled cloud), rain, sleet, snow. The stamp is 4.2 % of the short edge tall, 4 % in from the bottom-right corner. There is no place name on the stamp in this version.

How the weather is chosen

If you allow location, this phone finds the nearest of the Korea Meteorological Administration's 3,564 neighbourhood forecast points. Within 30 km it uses that point's 5 km grid cell and KMA's data; farther away it uses MET Norway's forecast for your position rounded to 0.1°.

MET Norway's value is the forecast for the current hour (temperature at 2 m and the next-hour symbol), shown in the caption as "MET Norway forecast for this hour". KMA's value is the latest hourly observation, with the sky from its short-range forecast. A missing temperature means a date-only stamp.

The reading is fetched when you turn the weather stamp on and refreshed every 10 minutes while the page is open; the shutter never waits for it. If it can't be fetched you'll see "Couldn't get the weather right now. Stamped the date only."

Weather is for fun, not for safety decisions. Check your national weather service for warnings.

Your photos and location stay with you

Photos are processed and saved on your phone. They are never uploaded, and their content is never analysed or logged. There is no face detection (which is also why there is no red-eye effect). Saved JPGs carry no EXIF.

Only with the weather stamp on does a coarse location (a KMA grid cell number, or your position rounded to 0.1°) go through our server to KMA or MET Norway. Our server logs keep neither the location nor your IP. Analytics record only kinds of action ("shot taken"), never place, time or position.

Questions

How do I make a digicam-style photo?

Tap Turn on camera and shoot, or use Pick a photo. Choose a body on the dial (2002 webcam, 2004 silver compact, 2007 pink slim, 2009 point-and-shoot) and in about 0.4 s the photo comes out with that look and an orange date stamp bottom-right. Then save or share.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. Photos are processed inside your browser and never sent anywhere. Only when the weather stamp is on does a coarse location go to the weather lookup: the 5 km grid cell number in Korea, or your position rounded to 0.1° (about 11 km) elsewhere. The last-12-shots roll lives in this browser only, and Clear roll deletes it.

Where does the weather on the stamp come from?

Outside Korea it is MET Norway's forecast for this hour at your rounded location. In Korea it is the Korea Meteorological Administration's latest observation (temperature, precipitation) plus its forecast sky for this hour. If no value comes back, the stamp shows the date only. It never shows a guessed number.

Why is the temperature a whole number?

The stamp is a 7-segment display like an old camera's, so it prints the rounded whole degree (63°F). The caption under the photo gives the official value to one decimal, in °F and °C.

What is '07 mode?

It changes only the year on the stamp to '07, so the photo claims to be from 2007. The caption then opens with "This is not a photo from 2007." and states the real date, time and weather, and the saved file name always carries the real date (IMG_0007_20261030.JPG).

Does the saved photo contain my location?

No. The JPG is drawn fresh on a canvas, so it has no EXIF at all: no GPS, no device, no time. The date and weather exist only in the stamp you can see. The original's rotation is read once to stand the photo upright.

The camera won't turn on on my iPhone

In Safari, allow the camera (aA in the address bar, or Settings > Safari > Camera) and tap Turn on camera again. In-app browsers (Instagram, KakaoTalk) can block the camera: open the page in Safari or Chrome. Pick a photo works everywhere.
