3-month penaltyIf you cash in before 5 years, you lose the last 3 months of interest. Cash in after 18 months and you get the first 15 months of interest. You never get back less than you paid.$25 unit roundingTreasury values every bond from a $25 unit, rounded to the cent each month, then multiplies. That's why a $10,000 bond moves in $4.00 steps and why our numbers match TreasuryDirect's to the cent.Composite rateThe rate a bond earns for 6 months: fixed + 2 × inflation + fixed × inflation, rounded to 0.01%. It never goes below 0%. Example: 0.90% fixed and 1.67% inflation give 4.26%.

How the value is calculated
The $25 unit, monthly growth, the 3-month penalty
Exact value for any I bond since 1998, with the 3-month penalty, the way TreasuryDirect calculates it. Treasury values every I bond from a $25 unit. Each month the unit grows by the bond's current composite rate (value × (1 + rate ÷ 2) to the power of months ÷ 6), rounded to the cent, and every 6 months the result becomes the new starting value. Your bond's value is the unit value times your amount ÷ $25, rounded to the cent. Before 5 years, cashing in costs the last 3 months of interest, but you never get back less than you paid.
We checked this method against 34 answers from TreasuryDirect's own Savings Bond Calculator and every cell of its I bond rate chart: they match to the cent. See the formulas and sources.
