How to copy a folder structure as text
No tree command needed · README · ChatGPT · Claude
A README, a bug report or a question to ChatGPT or Claude (“where should I change this in my project?”) often needs the folder structure as text. Drop the folder, open the Text view and you get this:
my-app/ ├── public/ │ └── logo.png ├── src/ │ ├── app/ │ │ ├── layout.tsx │ │ └── page.tsx │ └── lib/ │ └── utils.ts ├── package.json └── README.md
Steps
- Drag a folder onto the page or press “Choose folder”. On a phone, use “Open ZIP”.
- In the Text view, pick a depth (1 to 5 levels, or all), folders only, and whether to show sizes.
- Choose plain text, Markdown or JSON, then Copy or Save. “Copy for AI chat” adds one line of context and wraps the tree in a code block.
Compared with the tree command
On Windows, tree /f in Command Prompt prints the same shape; on a Mac you install tree with Homebrew. Both run in a terminal, need extra flags to skip node_modules and don't total sizes. Here node_modules, .git, .next, dist and build are left out of code projects by default, and your project's .gitignore rules can apply too.
Token count
Next to the text you see an approximate token count (characters ÷ 4). If the tree is too long for a chat, lower the depth or switch on “Folders only”.
How to find what takes up space
Downloads · C: drive · photo backups
When a disk is full, a picture beats a list. The answer line says how big the folder is, how many files it has and what the biggest part is (with its share). In the treemap, bigger folders get bigger blocks.
- Treemap: click a big block to go inside; use the path above it to come back out.
- Table: “100 biggest files” sorts by size; filter by extension to see only videos. Save as CSV for a spreadsheet.
- Types: space by kind: video, images, documents, code, archives and installers. Old installers (.dmg, .exe) in Downloads are often bigger than you think.
- Tree: the folder grows as a 3D tree. Branch thickness is size, the biggest file hangs as the biggest fruit, and bare twigs are empty folders.
Start with Downloads, Documents, Pictures or Movies rather than a whole drive. This tool never deletes anything: once you know what to remove, do it in Explorer or Finder.
Why nothing is uploaded
What is read and what isn't
Your folder is read inside this browser only. This is a static page with no server behind it, so there is nowhere for your file list to go. The page also carries a security rule (CSP) that blocks connections to anything but this site and Google Analytics.
- Read: file and folder names, paths, sizes and modified dates.
- Not read: file contents. The one exception is your .gitignore, when “Use .gitignore” is on.
- ZIP: nothing is extracted; only the list at the end of the zip is read.
- Analytics: only which view you chose and a size bucket (e.g. 10k to 100k items). Never names, paths or sizes.
Some browsers show “Upload N files to this site?” when you choose a folder. That is the browser's fixed wording; nothing is sent. Try it offline if you like: it still works.
Before sharing a picture, switch on “Hide names” to show “folder-1”, “file-3.jpg” instead. The share card hides names by default.

How do I copy a folder structure as text?
Drop the folder, open the Text view and press Copy. You get the familiar ├── └── tree, ready for a README. Switch on “Folders only”, limit the depth, show sizes, or change the format to Markdown or JSON.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The folder is read inside your browser. Only names, paths, sizes and modified dates are read, never file contents, and the page sends nothing while reading. It even works with the internet switched off.
How do I give ChatGPT or Claude my project structure?
Press “Copy for AI chat”. It copies one line of context plus the tree in a Markdown code block. node_modules, .git and build folders are left out by default, and an approximate token count is shown.
How do I find the biggest files on my computer?
Open the Table view and press “100 biggest files”, or use the Treemap: bigger folders take more area, so click the widest block to go inside and see where the space went.
Can I scan my whole C: drive or Mac disk?
Start with your user folder, Downloads or Documents: it's faster and those are usually where the space goes. Above 500,000 items only the first part is read and you'll be told. Browsers can't open some system folders.
How is this different from the tree command on Windows or Mac?
tree /f (Windows) or tree (Mac, via Homebrew) runs in a terminal and has no sizes or ignore rules. Here you drag the folder in and choose depth, folders only, sizes and .gitignore rules, then copy.
Does it work on a phone?
Phones can't drag folders, so use “Open ZIP” and pick a zip file. Only the zip's list of files (names, sizes, dates) is read, nothing is extracted. Some Android browsers also support choosing a folder.
Why are the sizes a little different from Finder?
Sizes here use 1 KB = 1,024 bytes, like Windows Explorer. macOS Finder counts 1 KB = 1,000 bytes, so Finder's numbers look slightly larger. Ignored folders such as node_modules are also left out while their switch is on.
